What this box is, in other words
Webshops, abonnementsdozen en alles wat door de brievenbus of met een pakketdienst mee moet. De doos wordt plat geleverd, in één beweging opgezet en dichtgevouwen zonder tape of lijm.
How it closes. De zijwanden rollen naar binnen en het deksel klapt erover; oortjes of tabs houden hem dicht. Geen lijm, geen nietje, en aan de buitenkant geen naad.
Worth knowing. De rolwanden kosten dikte. Een doos voor een boek van 20 mm dik wordt buitenwerks al gauw 7 mm langer dan de inhoud - dat is geen fout, dat is het karton dat twee keer om de hoek gaat.

How this one is built
- Folding order: 1) front and back wall up. 2) side wall up, over the roll bridge, inner wall down. 3) push the tongues at the foot of the inner wall straight into the slots in the base. 4) close the lid and drop the ears into the side pockets.
- Roll bridge = 3.40 mm: 1 layer(s) of 1.5 mm plus 0.40 mm clearance.
- Front and back wall are inset 3.00 mm at both ends so they fall inside the ear plane. Without that set-back the lid ear runs straight into the front wall.
- The inner wall ends in 2 tongues per side that go straight into slots in the base - no folded-over tab, so the roll has no reverse crease and the sheet never needs turning.

The drawing changes when you change the board: thickness compensation is built into every fold, so a 4 mm C-flute blank is not the same shape as a 0.45 mm carton blank.

Questions about this box
- What is a mailer box called in FEFCO?
- FEFCO 0427. It is also written as a roll end tuck top, or RETT. The same construction is sold as an e-commerce box, a subscription box and a shipping mailer, and all of those are the same blank.
- Do I need tape or glue for a mailer box?
- No. The side walls roll in and the lid tucks over them, and the ear locks or front tabs hold it shut. That is the whole point of the style: it ships flat and closes by hand.
- What board should a mailer box be?
- E-flute at 1.5 mm for most things: it folds cleanly, prints well and is stiff enough for a parcel. B-flute at 3 mm for heavier or fragile contents. F-flute at 0.8 mm for something small and light.
- Is this dieline free?
- Designing it and folding it in 3D are free and need no account. Downloading it is paid: €2.50 for the PDF to print and measure on paper, and €3.50 for a production file - DXF or SVG - because those are the ones that go to a cutting table.
- What is a dieline?
- The flat drawing a box is cut from. It shows where the knife cuts, where the board is creased to fold, and where it is perforated. A die maker turns it into a steel rule die; a plotter or laser cuts it directly. It is also written as "die line" or "die cut template".
- What file format does a die maker need?
- DXF, almost always. Ours is R12 DXF at 1:1 in millimetres with cut, crease, reverse crease and perforation each on their own layer, which is what a cutting table expects. The SVG is the same geometry for Illustrator, Affinity, Inkscape and laser software.
- Can I use it commercially?
- Yes. The files are yours: modify them, print them, make any number of boxes from them. No attribution and no licence fee, ever.
